Chianti - red Italian wine

CHIANTI is a red, Italian wine produced in Tuscany. Historically associated with a squat wrapped in straw, called a "fiasco" (flask), this is now only used by a few wine-makers and most Chianti is bottled in traditionally shaped wine bottles. Chianti is also the territory which gives its name to the wine; situated between the provinces of Siena and Florence and famous for its wine production since as far back as the 13th cent.: Greve, Gaiole, Castellina, Radda are the main towns in this area which is well-known for the beauty of the surroundings hills as well as the standard of living of its inhabitants.

Wine and territory – like the name they share – have continued to overlap throughout the years until they've almost become one and the same.

The first record of Chianti as a wine-growing area (and of the wine itself) goes back as mentioned to the 13th cent. and refers to the "League of Chianti" established in Florence to regulate administrative relations with Radda, Gaiole and Castellina, producers of a red wine made from Sangiovese grapes. Right from the start, amongst other things, the League began for the protection and commerce of this excellent product the insignia for which for which was a black cock on a gold field. This same symbol later became the emblem of the Chianti Classic Consortium, one of the two associations for the protection of Chianti.
